This project related to one half of a pair of semi-detached houses, with a significant level change between the internal house ground floor level and the garden, which had been addressed previously with various set of steps and decked areas which were at their end of life. Our clients had bought the house with the intention to build a loft conversion immediately with possible extension only possible as a later phase, however through the initial design process we determined that the most immediate improvement to their family quality of life could be delivered by alteration only at first floor which improved bedroom provision without loft conversion. This left space in the budget for the ground floor works to improve family spaces, and by way of converting the garage creation of a further offie which could double as a guest room when required.
The level changes across the site offered a great opportunity to zone what was otherwise a large open-plan space at the rear, within which we found spaces for family dining, kitchen with island and connected utility room, and a free-form music and play area which would remain flexible for adult and children’s use over the years, with the front room was maintained as a separate sitting room.
A comparatively small extension to the rear and careful planning of internal structural alteration, including deliberately retaining a structural column, created opportunities to make for a split-level space full of light, while still allowing for conceptual separation of function. Working with Studio Fabbri, an interior designer we have collaborated with in the past, also allowed enhancement of the spaces through a curated palette of materials, colours, and textures, with bespoke joinery by Jon Grant London.
